Discovery of Antiseptics
Antiseptic was discovered around the 1860s by Joseph Lister (1827-1912), who was a british professor of surgery at the time (Kelly, Evelyn B., 2000, pg. 363). It all began in 1852 when Lister was a sugeon who was concerned about the hgyiene of the surgical wards which caused many patients to die (Griffith, Robert K., 2004, pg. 47). He thought it was the "bad air" that caused surgical patients to be infected (Griffith, Robert K., 2004, pg. 47). Not until when he read publications by a French chemist, Louis Pasteur, he was persuaded that the germs in the air was the actual cause of infections (Kelly, Evelyn B., 2000, pg. 363). Germs were needed to be killed in order to prevent infections, so Lister used Carbolic acid (also known as Phenol), a antimicrobial agent as antiseptic during surgeries (Griffith, Robert K., 2004, pg. 47). With the discovery of antiseptic, more antiseptics were discovered (hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol etc.) and it became an essntial substance in the medical field.

Antiseptics that can be seen in stores today.
The history of Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide was discovered in 1818 by Louis Jacques Thénard (1777-1857) who was a French chemist (N. Schlager, J. Weisblatt, & D. E. Newton, 2006, pg. 363). It all happened when Louis Jacques Thénard was working on his study of "ether" which one of them was barium peroxide with nitic acid and later on was improved with hydrochloic acid ("Famous Scientists - Louis Jacques Thenard discovers hydrogen peroxide", n.d., para. 7) (Thenard, Louis Jacques, n.d., para. 7) .It has had many changes over centuries because people thought that pure hydrogen peroxide was unstable. It was first used for bleaching hats in the 1800s (N. Schlager, J. Weisblatt, & D. E. Newton, 2006, pg. 363). But now, hydrogen peroxide is widely used for medical proposes to everyday household cleaning products ("Famous Scientists - Louis Jacques Thenard discovers hydrogen peroxide", n.d., para. 12).
